Meet MeeGo: the credible alternative rising in the mobile OSes environment

Is the mobile and embedded operating system a three way race ? Between Google, Apple and Microsoft ? Linux has already proven it can rapidly enter markets where it was not present before. And doing so allows to a greater competition and innovation. It took time but now we have a real, and completely open alternative.

Is closed development, as it is a standard in the industry, the only solution for mobile and embedded OSes ?

Today stuck between the three giants Google, Apple and Microsoft, the market appears to be made of an infinite number of clones of the same products with different form factors. It is ok for manufacturers that just want something working out of the box, but "what happens if you want to design entirely new innovative products?". Is it possible to work together in an open way and achieve success in creating differentiated new products?

This talk will try to demonstrate that what really matters at the end of the day, isn't who will grab most of the market shares, but "what can diversity bring to the customers".

Meego is a Linux-based, open source software platform for multiple types of devices that range from netbooks to handheld computing and communication devices, in-vehicle infotainment devices, smart TVs, tablets and more. This presentation, held by the French Meego Network, will introduce the possibilities offered by Meego and its open development and community-friendly processes. Together we will try to grasp the differences in approach with other systems and list the benefits it can provide to the mobile and embedded ecosystem, as well as the open source communities and projects.
