The Community Summit is an open workshop focusing on the growth and management of open source communities. This year, the Summit will look at what keeps communities together: the Deal of Community, contributions and commitment in return for tangible and intangible benefits. We will discuss the Deal of Community in two sessions, one focusing on community citizenship, and the other on current legal and licensing issues.
Communities are an essential part of an open world as they provide the links between stakeholders pursuing their private interests, and serve as a neutral ground where independent members can meet and share their visions, their expectations, and the results of their joint efforts.
Since the value of a community as perceived by each individual member is a function of the collective contribution of its members, the key to an active community starts with its members asking what they can do for the community rather than what the community can do for them. In other words, good community citizenship determines the sustainability of communities.
Attendees to the track Community Summit: The Deal Of Community will have a unique opportunity to share in the wisdom and experience acquired through years of management of, and contributions to numerous communities and foundations including: Apache, Eclipse, Fedora, Fossbazar, Gnome, MySQL, OpenOffice, OuterCurve, OW2, SourceForge, etc.
Come and join renowned community practitioners Emmanuel Lecharny, John Mertic, Martin Michlmayr, Mike Milinkovich, Dave Neary, Simon Phipps, Mikko Puhakka, Louis Suarez-Potts, Cedric Thomas, Ross Turk, Karsten Wade and Stephen Wally among the confirmed speakers.
